Program Overview

The Master of Applied Professional Studies (MAPS) program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is designed to help students achieve their professional goals. The program allows students to integrate classes from at least two programs to create a cohesive and comprehensive course of study.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the MAPS program, applicants must meet the Graduate School admissions requirements, which include:


  • A minimum requirement of a bachelor’s degree completed before graduate study begins or its international equivalent with an accredited institution
  • An average grade of B (cumulative GPA 3.0) or better
  • The GRE is not required for this program
  • MAPS does not require Supplemental documents

Application Deadline

The application deadline for Spring 2026 admissions is November 11, 2025.


Required Application Materials

The following materials are required for the MAPS program application:


  • Statement of Purpose: A statement explaining professional goals, ideas, issues, and concerns to be explored in the program of study. The statement should describe how classes from at least two programs will be integrated to create a cohesive course of study. The statement should be no more than 750 words, double-spaced, in .pdf format, and address the following questions:
    • What are the goals or intended outcomes for pursuing a MAPS degree?
    • Which academic departments and/or courses interest you? Identify courses from two (or more) academic departments that will fulfill professional objectives, and explain why those courses were selected.
    • How will the knowledge and skills learned in MAPS align with professional goals and contribute to development?
    • What strengths do you bring that will make you a successful student in the program?
    • If you do not meet minimum application criteria, please provide an explanation.
  • Resume or Curriculum Vita
  • Unofficial transcripts
  • Three letters of recommendation: Three references from professionals familiar with work performance and/or academic professors familiar with academic success.
