The Medical Education Development (MED) Program is a demanding academic preparatory program designed for students who demonstrate educational promise and commitment to health careers. This intensive curriculum mimics the first semester of medical and dental school, enhancing studying and test-taking skills and strengthening sciences to prepare students adequately for medical or dental school.

Program Structure and Duration

  • The program is tentatively planned for nine weeks, beginning in May and running through the last week of July.
  • It is held on the campus of UNC School of Medicine and Adams School of Dentistry.
  • Classes and professional sessions are scheduled Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with study review sessions on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Typical Weekly Schedule

  • A typical weekly schedule includes classes from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening courses, events, and office hours.
  • Mandatory Saturday review sessions are held each Saturday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

    • Weekly Exams

Attendance and Absence Policy

  • Students accepted into the MED Program are expected to be present for the full duration of the program.
  • Absences are excused in the event of personal illness, graduations, weddings, funerals, or extenuating circumstances.
  • Extended absence from the program will hinder performance, and further participation in the program will be left to the discretion of the Director.

Application and Selection Process

  • Over 300 applications are completed each year.
  • The program accepts 60 applicants in total, with 48 applicants accepted for the medical component and 12 for the dental component.
  • Applicants should expect notification about the status of their application by April 3, 2026.
  • There is a waitlist, but it is not ranked.
  • Interviews are part of the selection process.

Stipend and Accommodations

  • The program provides a taxable stipend of $3000, distributed in two installments of $2000 and $1000.
  • The first installment is paid at the end of June, and the second upon completion of the program, once all parking/room fees have been deducted.
  • The program pays for participant housing in an on-campus dormitory, with furniture provided (bed, dresser, and desk included). Participants must bring all personal items.
