Cours de mathématiques spéciales CMS
Program Overview
Introduction to the Cours de mathématiques spéciales (CMS)
The Cours de mathématiques spéciales (CMS) is a preparatory program designed for students who do not meet the direct admission requirements for the first year of the Bachelor's program at EPFL. It is also open to holders of gymnasial maturity on a voluntary basis. The CMS program allows students to consolidate their skills in basic sciences over a period of one year before starting their Bachelor's studies.
Benefits of the CMS Program
The CMS program is designed as a preparatory year during which future students focus on fundamental concepts in mathematics (analysis, linear algebra, and analytical geometry), physics, computer science, and chemistry. This enables students to become familiar with the teaching methods used at EPFL, expand their knowledge, and immerse themselves in the campus culture, thereby preparing them to start their Bachelor's program in the best possible conditions the following year.
Indicative Distribution of Weekly Course Hours
- Analysis I: 6 hours/week
- Algebraic calculation, notions of limits and continuity, properties of functions of one real variable, differential and integral calculus
- Analysis II: 4 hours/week
- Trigonometry, complex numbers, study of elementary functions (trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic)
- Analytical Geometry: 4 hours/week
- Vector calculus, scalar product, Cartesian representation of geometric objects (lines, planes, circles, etc.) in the plane and in space
- Linear Algebra: 4 hours/week
- Vector spaces, matrix calculus, study of linear transformations, systems of linear equations
- Physics: 6 hours/week
- Movement in the plane, laws of dynamics, energy, perfect gas, states of matter, electrostatics, magnetostatics
- Computer Science and Scientific Computing: 4 hours/week
- Introduction to algorithmics and programming, basics of numerical analysis, applications to the solution of scientific problems
- Chemistry: 3 hours/week
- Chemical bonds, stoichiometry, chemical equilibria, acids and bases, kinetics (only in the second semester)
Teaching Method
The teaching is given in French, in the form of lectures, according to the standard EPFL format: for each subject, two hours of lectures followed by two hours of exercises in class, supervised by the teacher and their assistants.
Immersion at EPFL
To perfect their immersion at EPFL, CMS students also have the opportunity to take French courses at the Language Center free of charge and enjoy full student status. They have access to the library and the sports center and can participate in various events proposed on the campus and activities organized by associations.
Admission Conditions
Directly accessible (subject to availability) to holders of gymnasial and professional maturity, admission to the CMS is conditional for other candidates.
Evaluation and Regulation
Holders of gymnasial maturity can automatically integrate into the Bachelor program of their choice. Other candidates must pass the CMS or the EPFL admission exam.
Teaching Team
The teaching team is described by former CMS students as "pedagogical, available, and dedicated to the success of their students."
For CMS Students
Virtual Office
The CMS virtual office is available to students 24/7.
Useful Documents
Consult the regulations, agenda, and schedule of the CMS.
