Program Overview
The EPFL Master's degree in Architecture is designed to provide students with a solid theoretical background and practical training in design and architecture. The program incorporates humanistic, structural, and technical aspects through close collaboration with sister programs within the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC).
Program Objectives
The program's objectives include providing a solid and methodical theoretical, scientific, and applied training at the Bachelor's level, followed by an in-depth approach to questions linked to current issues such as preservation of the environment, promotion of sustainable development, energy-wise optimization of constructions, use of new materials, and socio-economic impact of decisions taken during planning.
Simplified Study Plan
The Master's program consists of 120 ECTS credits. Please note that the information regarding programs' structure as well as the simplified study plans may be subject to change and that they are not legally binding. Only the official regulations and study plans are binding.
Admission Criteria
To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- EPFL Bachelor's degree in Architecture, or from another institution with an excellent academic record
- Practical experience of 12 months, of which 6 consecutive months at least in the same architecture unit
- A portfolio corresponding to the following criteria:
- Formal aspects:
- Maximum A4 format
- Quality and care of the presentation
- Graphic quality, precision of drawing and articulation
- Personal language, modes of articulation (drawing, model, modelling)
- Types of work:
- Academic works and projects as a priority
- Variety of work scales: from the architectural object to the urban and territorial scale
- Design projects and other disciplines if relevant
- From conceptualisation to materiality
- Positioning:
- Commitment and personal position
- Engagement with current key issues: climate transition, resource management, sustainability, social role of the architect, through thematic and project treatment
- Formal aspects:
The acquisition of additional credits to fill any gaps may be required. Meeting all of these criteria is no guarantee of admission.
Teaching Languages
The teaching languages for the program are French and English. An excellent command of French or English, and a good command of the other language are recommended.
Diploma and Title Obtained
Upon completion of their Master's curricula, students obtain an EPFL Master of Science MSc in Architecture. The diploma also gives graduates the right to use the title of EPF qualified Architect.
