Energy Science and Technology
Program Overview
Introduction to the Master's Program in Energy Science and Technology
The EPFL Master's program in Energy Science and Technology provides a world-class educational environment to train students in charge of developing future technologies in the field of energy engineering. Energy conversion and energy systems have shaped and will continue to shape the evolution of mankind, and this program tackles the challenges posed by renewable energy resources.
Program Objectives
The program's objectives are to train excellent students to become top professionals in the field of energy engineering, with the goal of driving industry, science, and market innovations. Future generations will rely on energy sources made available by massive renewable energy resources, and the program aims to address the technical and management challenges posed by these resources.
Program Structure
The Master's degree has three orientations:
- Energy conversion devices
- Energy systems
- Energy management and sustainability In addition to attending regular lectures offered by internationally-acclaimed professors, students gain valuable practical experience with laboratory activities in world-class research infrastructures.
Simplified Study Plan
The Master's program is designed to welcome students from various Bachelor's degrees and has a dedicated teaching program aimed to bridge the gap between different students' backgrounds. The program consists of 120 ECTS credits.
Admission Criteria
Admission criteria include:
- EPFL Bachelor's degrees obtained in a discipline related to science or engineering (e.g., Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Physics, Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or Microengineering) are eligible and subject to a dossier-based analysis.
- Bachelor's degrees obtained in these same fields but issued from another institution are eligible on the basis of the evaluation of their application dossier, accompanied by excellent academic records. The acquisition of additional credits to fill any gaps may be required. Meeting all of these criteria is no guarantee of admission.
Teaching Languages
The teaching languages are English, with a few courses in French.
Diploma and Title Obtained
Upon completion of their Master's curricula, students obtain an EPFL Master of Science MSc in Energy Science and Technology. The diploma also gives graduates the right to use the title of EPF qualified Engineer.
