Program Overview

Master Program with Specialization in Computer Science for Teaching

This Master's program is a joint initiative between EPFL and HEP-VD, aiming to train secondary school teachers in computer science.

The program consists of 120 + 9 ECTS credits, with the first year corresponding to the Master's in Computer Science (IN) or Data Science (DS), and the second year comprising specialization courses taken at HEP and a teaching internship in a secondary school. The Master's project (PDM) can be completed part-time during the second year or postponed to the third year (full-time for one semester). Additionally, an industry internship is required (8 weeks during the summer or 6 months during a semester, or integrated into the PDM).

Upon completion of their studies, students are awarded a Master's degree in Computer Science or Data Science, accompanied by a teaching diploma in computer science for secondary schools.

Detailed Program

1st Year

Equivalent to the Master's cycle IN or DS:

  • 32 ECTS of core courses (Groupe I).
  • 10 ECTS of optional courses (Groupe II).
  • 6 ECTS of SHS courses, validated by a course at HEP:
Learning, Development, and Teaching (MSENS31 – 6 ECTS in the autumn semester – possible time slots on Monday or Tuesday afternoons) – this course is intended primarily for students who are in a teaching internship, so it is also possible to take it in the 2nd year.
  • 12 ECTS of research project.

At least 50 ECTS, including the HEP course and the core courses (Groupe I), must be obtained to begin the specialization in the 2nd year.

2nd Year

Consisting of specialization courses taken at HEP (30 ECTS) and the PDM (30 ECTS), with each semester:

  • 6 ECTS of didactics of computer science courses at HEP (MSINF21 in the autumn semester and MSINF22 in the spring semester – possible time slot on Friday afternoons).
  • 9 ECTS of practical training (internship & integration seminar).
  • In parallel, 15 ECTS of part-time PDM at EPFL (preceded by an industry internship during the summer) or in a company.

It is possible to postpone the industry internship and the PDM to the 3rd year. In this case, the 2nd year is dedicated solely to the practical training internship in a secondary school, as well as the HEP courses and any remaining EPFL courses.

Pedagogical Component

A pedagogical component is required in at least one of the projects, according to one of the following options:
A – This pedagogical component is integrated into the PDM, which will be supervised by an accredited IC professor and an HEP supervisor, possibly in the form of a mini-project during or after the PDM.
B – This pedagogical component is integrated into the 12-credit research project, instead of the PDM, which is supervised in the same manner. This option is only possible if students have started their HEP year and pedagogical training or have prior teaching experience.
C – This pedagogical component takes the form of a professional thesis supervised by HEP only.

The additional 9 ECTS correspond to the balance of education science modules and are completed at HEP, outside of the EPFL Master's program. Here is the list of courses to be taken at HEP in this context (possible time slots on Monday or Tuesday afternoons):

  • Pedagogical relationship and classroom climate (MSISO31 – 6 ECTS) in the autumn semester.

as well as an optional course (3 ECTS) given in the spring semester, chosen from:

  • Adolescent development (MSDEV33).
  • Evaluation of learning (MSENS33).
  • Alterities and integrations (MSISO33).
  • Educational systems, organizations, actors, knowledge (MSSYS33).

The optional course given in the spring semester can also be taken during the 1st year.

Please note that the Teaching Diploma for secondary schools will only be awarded by HEP after successful completion of the EPFL Master's program.

Registration and Deadlines

As with other Master's programs, the registration deadline (for students from other sections or outside EPFL) is set for March 31st of the preceding academic year.

Please consult the admission criteria for the Master's in Computer Science or Data Science beforehand.

The deadline for registration with the section is set for June 30th of the preceding academic year.

It is also essential that students officially register with HEP-VD before the end of January in their 1st year of the Master's program.

For any additional information, please write directly to the relevant contacts.

The final answer is: $\boxed{}$
