Program Overview
Overview
The Master of Animal Science program is designed for recent graduates in any field, those with a Graduate Certificate in Animal Science, and established professionals wanting to upgrade their skills or redirect their career into animal science. This program is available in multiple durations, and students can apply for any duration as long as they meet the entry requirements.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible to complete the degree in 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent), students need:
- a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in any discipline, or
- a graduate certificate in animal science, or
- to have successfully completed at least 3 years of study towards an approved qualification at an overseas partner institution, with a formal pathway to the Master of Animal Science. Students must have a grade point average (GPA) of 4.5 on a 7-point scale in their previous qualification.
To be eligible to complete the degree in 1.5 years full-time (or part-time equivalent), students need:
- a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, or
- to have successfully completed at least 3.5 years of study towards an approved qualification at an overseas partner institution, including research requirements, with a formal pathway to the Master of Animal Science. Students must have a GPA of 4.5 on a 7-point scale in their previous qualification.
Relevant disciplines include agricultural science, biological science, plant science (botany, horticulture or agronomy), equine science, animal science (behaviour, production or technology), wildlife science, wildlife management, veterinary science, veterinary technology, and zoology.
Fields of Study
The program offers two fields of study:
- Production Animal Science: This field is designed for students who want to play an essential role in the management and production of domestic farm animals. Students will develop research, multi-disciplinary, and leadership skills to integrate and apply knowledge to manage animal production facilities and businesses.
- Wildlife Biology: This field is designed for students who want to play an essential role in the management, conservation, and utilisation of wildlife. Students will develop research, multi-disciplinary, and leadership skills to integrate and apply knowledge to manage wildlife and its associated issues, such as human-wildlife conflict.
Fees and Scholarships
The indicative annual fee for domestic students is $4,945. The approximate yearly cost of full-time tuition for international students is AUD $54,096. There are additional costs associated with field trip courses, and students may be eligible for financial aid or scholarships.
How to Apply
All international applications should be submitted to UQ. Domestic applications should also be submitted to UQ. The program code for the Master of Animal Science is 5571. Students can apply for any duration as long as they meet the entry requirements. When applying, students should select their preferred duration and may also ask to be considered for a longer duration if they don't meet the entry requirements for their first preference.
English Language Requirements
International students must meet the English language requirements, which include:
- IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6.
- TOEFL iBT (including Paper Edition) - Overall 87, listening 19, reading 19, writing 21, and speaking 19.
- PTE Academic - Overall Score of 64 and 60 in all sub-bands.
- BE - A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all macro skills.
- CES - Overall 176 and 169 in all sub-bands.
Student Visas
International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Master of Animal Science are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa (subclass 500). There are a number of requirements that must be satisfied before a visa is granted, including the Genuine Student (GS) requirement.
Additional Application Information
Students will be exposed to animals and agricultural environments as part of their learning. If students are undertaking the 2-year duration program (32 units), immunisation against Q fever is mandatory, and they will be required to provide evidence of immunisation upon commencement of the program.
