Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting

Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting (MATI) program is designed for individuals seeking advanced training in specialized translation and interpreting, as well as community-level training in translation and interpreting. Students can choose to specialize in Chinese-English or Japanese-English translating and interpreting.

Aptitude Test

Purpose of the Aptitude Test

The Aptitude Test is designed to assess the current level of linguistic skills in both languages and the potential and aptitude for training as a translator and interpreter.


Who Needs to Take the Aptitude Test

The aptitude test is not required for native speakers of the language of study who reside in a country where the language is spoken. All other applicants, including domestic students, may be required to take the aptitude test.


Aptitude Test Format

The test includes a written translation task and may also include an oral interpreting task.


Test Dates and Location

The test will be conducted online via Zoom on the following dates:


  • 10 am Tuesday, 28 May
  • 10 am Tuesday, 11 June

Test Fee

The fee to sit the MATI or Graduate Diploma Aptitude Test is $55.00 (including GST), while the Graduate Certificate Aptitude Test is $35.00 (including GST).


Preparing for the Test

To prepare for the Aptitude Test, students should familiarize themselves with the format of the test and keep up-to-date with current affairs by reading newspapers and magazines in both languages.


Program Structure

The MATI program is a two-year, full-time program that offers intensive training in translation and interpreting. The program is endorsed by NAATI at the following levels:


  • Certified Translator
  • Certified Advanced Translator
  • Certified Provisional Interpreter
  • Certified Interpreter
  • Certified Specialist Health Interpreter
  • Certified Specialist Legal Interpreter
  • Certified Conference Interpreter

Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma Programs

The university also offers Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma programs in Arts in Translation and Interpreting. These programs are designed for individuals seeking an introduction to the world of translation and interpreting or looking to upskill their current level of competency.


Graduate Certificate in Arts in Translation (GCAT) and Graduate Certificate in Arts in Interpreting (GCAI)

These one-year, part-time programs offer industry-focused training in community translation and interpreting. The GCAT is endorsed by NAATI at the Certified Translator level, while the GCAI is endorsed at the Certified Provisional Interpreter and Certified Interpreter levels.


Graduate Diploma in Arts in Translation and Interpreting (GDATI)

This one-year, full-time program offers industry-focused training in community translation and interpreting. The GDATI is endorsed by NAATI at the Certified Translator, Certified Provisional Interpreter, and Certified Interpreter levels.


Employment Prospects

Graduates of the MATI program can work as freelance or in-house translators and interpreters, or build careers in business, government, and education. The program's endorsement by NAATI provides certified graduates with a competitive edge in the translation and interpreting industry.


NAATI Certification

NAATI Certification is an acknowledgement that an individual has demonstrated the skills needed to practice as a translator or interpreter in Australia. Students who have successfully completed NAATI-endorsed qualifications are eligible to apply to sit the Certification tests at the endorsed levels without satisfying any other prerequisites.
