The Introduction to Human Factors and Human-Centred Design in Mining course provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of human factors as it relates to mining. This course focuses on the contribution that human factors approaches can make in optimising mining equipment design, designing for diversity, and equipment operations and maintenance through evidence-based insights and real-world examples.

This course is for people working in the mining industry or regulatory authorities. It is targeted at people who are not human factors specialists but whose work involves:
- Supervising, managing or overseeing workers involved in hazardous operations
- Identifying or addressing workplace hazards
- Investigating workplace incidents

- Participation in equipment procurement processes

- Appreciate the contribution that human-centred design can make at all stages of the equipment life cycle
- Better understand key human factors considerations relevant to mining equipment design, operation and maintenance
- Participate more effectively in human-centred design activities
- Identify potential human factors issues in the workplace
- Better understand the human aspects of automation
- Make better procurement decisions by considering the right issues and asking suppliers the right questions
Time Commitment
This is an in-person or online course that will require roughly 40 hours to complete, consisting of:
- 2-day workshop
- Plus 25 hours of independent study
Assessment
You will need to complete 2 assessments:
- A multiple-choice quiz on Day 2 of the workshop
- An analysis of human factors in your organisation, which will take about 20 hours over 4 weeks following the workshop
Certification and Accreditation
Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion to verify their skills and achievements.
