Program Overview

The Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting HLTAID012 course is a nationally accredited qualification designed for teachers, early childhood, and after-school care workers. This course provides training in general first aid, with an in-depth focus on asthma and anaphylaxis management.


Course Details

  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Delivery mode: Online learning + practical workshop
  • Location: A UQ campus, with the option to run the program at locations around Australia on request

Course Objectives

The course covers how to:


  • Manage common medical emergencies, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, febrile seizures, strokes, and diabetic emergencies
  • Perform back blows and chest thrusts for a choking infant and child
  • Understand medical action plans for allergies, anaphylaxis, and asthma
  • Administer (placebo) auto-injectors of the Epipen and Anapen for anaphylactic reactions and Ventolin with a spacer for asthma attacks
  • Understand your legal duty of care and specific workplace requirements

The course uses the latest equipment from industry to empower students to be confident in saving lives. Friendly and professional trainers will assist students and ensure they have the skills to pass. The blended delivery mode includes:


  • 5 hours of self-paced online study
  • In-person practical workshop

Varied delivery modes, such as in-person workshops or assessment only, are available for high schools and other stakeholder organisations.


Assessment

Students must complete the online coursework and pass the quizzes at least 72 hours prior to the practical workshop.


Requirements

  • Physical capacity to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor
  • Recommended age: at least 16 years old to participate in this course
  • Access to a computer with a Windows operating system, up-to-date versions of Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader, and a reliable internet connection

Accreditation

This course is a nationally accredited training course endorsed by the Australian Skills Quality Authority. The techniques learned are in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines, and the course meets the nominated workplace first aider requirements under the Safe Work Australia First Aid Code of Practice. The Code of Practice recommends undertaking refresher training in CPR annually and first aid qualifications every 3 years.
