The Provide First Aid in a Remote or Isolated Site program, coded as HLTAID013, is a nationally accredited qualification designed to equip participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills necessary to administer critical first aid in remote or isolated locations.
Program Description
This comprehensive training program emphasizes the fundamental principles of first aid and addresses specific strategies for improvising with limited resources, managing prolonged emergency situations, and effectively coordinating with external medical support. Participants will develop the confidence and competence required to handle a wide range of medical emergencies where prompt and effective first aid can be a matter of life or death.
Program Details
- The program covers how to:
- Respond to an emergency situation, apply correct first aid procedures, and coordinate evacuations
- Conduct secondary assessments and look for vital signs
- Prepare equipment and perform risk assessments based on terrain/activity
- Perform resuscitation procedures, including defibrillator use
- Communicate details and review incidents
- Recognize signs and symptoms of life-threatening bleeds and how to manage them with tourniquets and haemostatic dressings
- Understand guidelines, workplace code of practice, legislation, duty of care, and first aider responsibilities
Program Delivery
The program is delivered through a blended learning model, consisting of:
- 12 hours of online study, where participants learn at their own pace through easy-to-understand content broken down into relevant modules
- 2 days of hands-on in-person workshops with a trainer to practice skills and undergo scenario assessments
Assessment
Participants must complete the online coursework and pass the quizzes at least 72 hours prior to the practical workshop.
Location
The program is available at the UQ Gatton campus. It can also be run at locations around Australia on request, subject to minimum numbers.
Program Requirements
To enroll in this course, participants must have the physical capacity to:
- Perform up to 4 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a floor
- Walk a kilometer outdoors while wearing a light backpack
Program Fees
- Full fee: $445
- UQ staff fee: $425
Program Accreditation
This course meets the nominated workplace first aider requirements under the Safe Work Australia First Aid Code of Practice. The Code of Practice recommends undertaking refresher training in CPR annually and first aid qualifications every 3 years. The HLTAID013 course is to be undertaken every 3 years.
