Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Science is designed for graduates who have majored in mathematics, physics, or statistics and want to deepen their knowledge. In one year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) study, students will choose from a variety of courses, gaining specialized knowledge and valuable skills in their field.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for entry, students will need:

• A bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in any discipline with first-year university-level mathematics (including calculus, multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, and ordinary differential equations), or
• 5 years full-time equivalent, relevant work experience. Students must have a grade point average (GPA) of 4.5 on a 7-point scale in their previous qualification.

Fields of Study

The program offers the following fields of study:

• Applied Mathematics: Develop critical thinking skills and learn advanced mathematical techniques for approaching problems in a logical, analytical, and creative manner.
• Mathematics: Focus on the intrinsic nature and fundamental properties of mathematics, and recognize its ubiquity, universality, and beauty.
• Physics: Study fundamental natural laws and demonstrate how and why things work at scales ranging from the sub-nuclear, through the everyday, and onto the entire cosmos.
• Statistics: Apply mathematical principles to the collection, analysis, and presentation of numerical data.

Fees and Scholarships

The indicative annual fee for the program is $5,910 (2026). International students can expect to pay approximately $58,056 (2026). There are various scholarships available, including the Neil Brice Memorial Fund, Edwin Munro Scholarship in Agricultural Science, and Roslyn Griffiths Veterinary Science Bursary.

All international applications should be submitted to UQ. The program code for the Graduate Diploma in Science is 5240. The closing date for this program is:

• To commence study in semester 2: May 31 of the year of commencement.
• To commence study in semester 1: November 30 of the previous year.
