Course Descriptions

  • PEDD 334: Introduction to Pediatric Dentistry: Discussion of all aspects of dentistry and their unique implementation for the special needs of the pediatric and adolescent patient. Prerequisite: Enrollment in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program.
  • PEDD 335: Honors Course in Pediatric Dentistry: The course will broaden the student's knowledge and skills of the specialty of pediatric dentistry through literature review, case review, patient care, clinical cases, and problem-based learning case studies. Prerequisite: PEDD 334 and consent of the instructor.
  • PEDD 337: Orientation to Hospital Dentistry: An introductory course covering hospital organization, protocols, and procedures. Charting, diagnostic testing, and physical assessment are included. Prerequisite: Enrollment in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program.
  • PEDD 338: Pediatric Dentistry Clinic I: Clinical experience in comprehensive dental care for children including preventive and restorative dentistry, preventive and interceptive orthodontics, and treatment of oral dental emergencies. Prerequisite: PEDD 332 and PEDD 333.
  • PEDD 347: Special Patient Care Clinic: Develops skill in the assessment, evaluation, and dental management of the medically and neurologically compromised patient, through directed patient care activity, case presentations, and reporting. Prerequisite: Senior standing in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program and concurrent registration in PEDD 342.
  • PEDD 348: Pediatric Dentistry Clinic II: Continues PEDD 338. Advanced clinical experience in the comprehensive dental care for children, including preventive and restorative dentistry, preventive and interceptive orthodontics, and treatment of dental emergencies. Prerequisite: PEDD 332 and PEDD 333.
  • PEDD 349: Hospital Rotation: Provides a direct opportunity for participation in the care, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of dental patients in various hospital settings. Prerequisite: PEDD 337.
  • PEDD 410: Principles and Methods in Dental Research I: Introduces students to several of the more commonly used statistical procedures for testing hypotheses; provides students with a beginner's set of tools for using statistics. Prerequisite: Enrollment in post-graduate or graduate program in pediatric dentistry.
  • PEDD 411: Principles and Methods in Dental Research II: Designed to provide the student with an understanding of the scientific method. Prerequisite: PEDD 410.
  • PEDD 501: Dental Pediatrics I: The pathophysiology and biologic basis of the neurologically, mentally, and medically compromised developing child and the implications to dental management and research.
  • PEDD 502: Dental Pediatrics II: The pathophysiology and biologic basis of the neurologically, mentally, and medically compromised developing child and the implications to dental management and research. Prerequisite: PEDD 501.
  • PEDD 522: Hospital Dentistry - Oral Care for Patients with Special Health Care Needs I: The first course in a two-course series that covers common disabilities and acute and chronic diseases/conditions of childhood and adolescence and their oral health implications.
  • PEDD 523: Hospital Dentistry - Oral Care for Patients with Special Health Care Needs II: A continuation of PEDD 522. Covers common disabilities and acute and chronic diseases/conditions of childhood and adolescence and their oral health implications.
  • PEDD 530: Dental Traumatology: Presentation of epidemiology of dental trauma in children, the nature and consequences of trauma, how to examine and diagnose dental trauma, management of dental trauma, and how it can be prevented.
  • PEDD 531: Pulp Therapy and Clinical Applications of Dental Materials: Provides an overview of pulp biology and pulp therapy for primary and immature permanent teeth and to review dental materials in the context of restoring the effects of caries and trauma to primary and permanent teeth.
  • PEDD 595: Pediatric Dentistry Seminar: Presentation and discussion of current literature and research in pediatric dentistry, medical and dental aspects of pulpal therapy, traumatology, fluorides, and cariology. Provides behavior guidance and application of material from other areas.
  • PEDD 600: Advanced Pediatric Dentistry Technique: To reinforce the fundamentals of restorative dentistry and orthodontic techniques for the child patient and provide in-depth understanding of the scientific basis for the procedures. Prerequisite: Enrollment in a postgraduate program in dentistry.
  • PEDD 615: Practice Administration in Pediatric Dentistry: Practice administration. Prepares the student to analyze practice systems and to design and develop a private or public patient-care delivery system. Prerequisite: Enrollment in a postgraduate program in dentistry.
  • PEDD 616: Pediatric Oral Pathology: Review and discuss lesions of the oral cavity and jaws involving pediatric patients. Differential diagnosis and management of dental patients are emphasized. Prerequisite: Enrollment in a postgraduate program in dentistry.
  • PEDD 620: Pediatric Dentistry Clinic/Case Conference: Comprehensive dental care of the child with behavior problems and complex dental care needs including the management of the neurologically, mentally, and medically compromised individuals. Prerequisite: Enrollment in a postgraduate program in dentistry.
  • PEDD 621: Hospital Dentistry: Trains the student in hospital and procedures, pediatric medicine, anesthesia, and the care of the child in the hospital setting. Prerequisite: Enrollment in a postgraduate program in dentistry.
  • PEDD 673: Pediatric Physical Diagnosis: Designed to provide didactic and clinical experience in the assessment of the physical status of healthy and medically compromised patients. Prerequisite: Enrollment in a postgraduate program in dentistry.
  • PEDD 698: Research in Pediatric Dentistry: Students register for this course when working on their research requirements for the Certificate Program in Pediatric Dentistry. Prerequisite: Enrollment in the Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry program and approval of the department.
