Program Overview

The BA with a Major in Central & Eastern European Studies—Russian Studies Concentration is a degree program offered by the University of Illinois Chicago. This program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the languages, cultures, and histories of Central and Eastern Europe, with a focus on Russian Studies.


Degree Requirements

To earn a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences degree from UIC, students must complete university, college, and departmental degree requirements. The Department of Polish, Russian, and Lithuanian Studies degree requirements are outlined below.


  • Major Requirements: 27 hours
  • General Education and Electives to reach Minimum Total Hours: 93 hours
  • Total Hours: 120 hours

Major Requirements

The following courses are required for the major:


  • RUSS 104: Intermediate Russian II (4 hours)
  • Select one of the following:
    • CEES 224: Introduction to Literary Analysis of Central Eastern European Texts (3 hours)
    • CEES 225: Introduction to Central and Eastern European Cultures (3 hours)
  • In addition, students must complete 20 semester hours in the Russian Studies concentration.

Concentration in Russian Studies Requirements

The following courses are required for the concentration:


  • 20 hours of coursework in Russian Studies at the 100, 200, 300, or 400 level
  • Recommended Courses:
    • RUSS 201: Advanced Russian through Media and Film
    • RUSS 202: Advanced Russian through Contemporary Culture
    • RUSS 203: Advanced Russian through Short Stories
