Museum and Exhibition Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago puts social justice at the heart of our work and scholarship.


Admission Requirements

Applicants are considered on an individual basis. In addition to the Graduate College minimum requirements, applicants must meet the following program requirements:


  • Baccalaureate Field: No Restrictions.
  • Grade Point Average: At least 3.00 (A=4.00) for the final 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate study.
  • Tests Required: The GRE is not required for application to the Museum and Exhibition Studies program.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Three required from faculty members or others familiar with the applicant’s education, skills and/or experience.
  • Personal Statement: Applicants must submit a short statement of purpose.
  • Writing Sample: Applicants may submit a written response to a specific prompt found on the MUSE application or share a previously written paper relevant to their interests. Writing should be clear, free of typographical errors, and demonstrate the applicant's interests in the field of Museum and Exhibition Studies.

English Competency Test Score

  • TOEFL 95, with subscores of Reading 24, Listening 24, Speaking 24, and Writing 22 (iBT Test); 60, with subscores of Reading 19, Listening 17, Writing 21 (revised Paper-Delivered Test),OR,
  • IELTS 7.0, with subscores of 6.5 for all four subscores,OR ,
  • PTE-Academic54, with subscores of Reading 51, Listening 47, Speaking 53, and Writing 56.

Application Deadline

The application deadline is December 15 for all applicants.
