Program Overview

Biomedical Sciences Major

The Biomedical Sciences Major is designed for students who wish to improve health through research or as a medical professional. This major centers around how core biological systems apply to human and animal health and disease at the molecular, cellular, and systemic levels.

At a Glance

  • Degree type: Bachelor of Science
  • Format: On campus
  • Part of: College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
  • Competitive major: Yes, for some concentrations
  • Accelerated option: Yes, for some concentrations

Concentrations

A concentration allows students to specialize in a certain area within their major, offering a depth of information and hands-on experiences. Students in this major must choose a concentration.

Anatomy and Physiology

Students will have opportunities to engage in elective courses and laboratory research in specialty areas of endocrinology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, neurophysiology, reproductive physiology, and cardiopulmonary physiology.

Environmental Public Health

Students will learn how to help prevent injuries and disease by managing environmental hazards and promoting healthier air, water, soil, homes, workplaces, and communities. They will have the opportunity to put their skills into practice during a capstone internship.

Microbiology and Infectious Disease

Students will explore the dynamic and complex interactions between microorganisms and their hosts. This program offers in-depth exposure to cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive infectious diseases, immune responses, and microbial pathogenesis. Through elective courses and hands-on laboratory research, students can specialize in areas such as immunology, mycobacterial infections, prion biology, vector-borne diseases, and virology.

Career Options

The Biomedical Sciences Major will open up a variety of opportunities for further medical studies or employment in the broad area of biomedical sciences. Some potential career paths include:

  • Researcher
  • Biotechnology professional
  • Government employee
  • Pharmacist or pharmacy technician
  • Pharmacological researcher
  • Epidemiologist
  • Toxicologist
  • Health consultant
