Program Overview

Certificate Program Undergraduate Certificate in Vector-Borne Diseases

The Undergraduate Certificate in Vector-Borne Diseases provides a solid foundation in emerging vector-borne diseases, equipping undergraduate students with the knowledge and skills for careers in fields such as public health, vector control, and epidemiology. Interdisciplinary courses allow for a tailored focus on applied vector control operations or virology and infectious diseases.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of vector-borne diseases, including their biology, ecology, and control. The program is offered by the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology, which is home to world-renowned scientists and leaders in laboratory research.

Program Highlights

  • Only disease vector-focused academic credential in the region for undergraduate students entering the workforce
  • Take courses taught by faculty in the renowned Center for Vector-borne Infectious Diseases
  • Tailor the certificate to receive cross-disciplinary training opportunities in vector identification, control and operational management, and epidemiology
  • Engage with state, academic, and operational partners as part of the CDC’s Rockies and High Plains Training and Evaluation Program in Vector-borne Diseases

Research Opportunities

Up to three elective credits can be earned towards the certificate by conducting research and/or completing an independent study project in a vector-biology lab active in the CSU Center for Vector-borne Infectious Diseases. Such opportunities might include conducting research with arthropod vectors in an experimental laboratory setting, contributing to vector and arbovirus surveillance activities in the field, or deepening topical understanding of vector-borne disease issues through literature reviews and other independent projects.

Additionally, the RaHP VEC supports paid summer internship opportunities for those interested in vector control and public health.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Information on tuition and financial aid can be found through the Office of Financial Aid, which provides resources on scholarships, grants, loans, and student employment, as well as guidance on understanding tuition, fees, and the billing process.

Location

The program is located in Fort Collins, Colorado, which offers a unique blend of education, industry, outdoor recreation, and cultural activities. The city is situated at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, providing extensive access to trails, fishing, rock climbing, and camping, with over 300 days of sun per year.
