Program Overview
Ph.D. in Economics
The Ph.D. in Economics program is designed to provide students with advanced training in economic theory, econometrics, and research methods. The program is structured to help students develop a deep understanding of economic principles and their applications in various fields.
Program Requirements
- A minimum of 72 credits are required to complete this program.
- The program consists of core courses, field courses, electives, research, and dissertation.
- Core courses include:
- Microeconomic Analysis I (AREC 606/ECON 606)
- Econometric Theory I (AREC 635/ECON 635)
- Microeconomic Analysis II (AREC 706/ECON 706)
- Econometric Theory II (AREC 735/ECON 735)
- Students must select one course from the following:
- Advanced Econometric Methods: Discrete Choice Models (AREC 736A/ECON 736A)
- Advanced Econometric Methods: Panel Data Models (AREC 736B/ECON 736B)
- Advanced Econometric Methods: Time Series Models (AREC 736C/ECON 736C)
- Field courses: Two pairs of field courses from among those designated by the department.
- Electives: 9 credits of electives at the 500-level or above, chosen with advisor approval.
- Research and dissertation:
- Research--Technical Paper (ECON 698)
- Seminar--Doctoral Research (ECON 793)
- Dissertation (ECON 799)
Exams and Evaluations
- Students must pass the written Ph.D. Qualifying Examination, the preliminary Oral Examination, and the final Oral Examination.
