HDFS 410 - Promoting Early Socioemotional Development

  • Course Description: Explore social and emotional development in children ages 3-8, with a focus on atypical and typical development, developmental theories and models, risk and protective factors, evidence-based programs, and empirically validated strategies for preventing challenging behaviors.
  • Course Learning Objectives:
    1. Explain and apply theories of social and emotional development in preschool and early elementary-aged children.
    2. Summarize and apply research on socialization, socioemotional development, and mental health during childhood.
    3. Synthesize and apply evidence-based practices for young children that help prevent challenging behaviors while fostering adaptive social skills, emotion regulation, and mental health.
    4. Evaluate evidence-based practices for inclusion of young children with socioemotional or behavioral health differences from diverse familial and cultural contexts.
    5. Apply information and screening strategies regarding childhood adversity etiology, outcomes, and intervention, and evaluate the effectiveness of human service systems and intervention programs for adversity-exposed children.
  • Prerequisite: HDFS 310 (Infant and Child Development in Context); HDFS 334 (Family and Parenthood Across the Life Cycle); completion of 60 credits.
