Lean Six Sigma White Belt Program

Introduction to Process Improvement Efforts

The Lean Six Sigma White Belt program introduces participants to the Lean and Six Sigma methodologies using the DMAIC framework—Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control—as well as tools to enhance fundamental analytical skills and process improvement applications. This program is designed to introduce process improvement efforts at an organizational level and teach basic Lean Six Sigma terminology and concepts as they are applied to the work environment.


Course Description

  • Introduction to Lean Six Sigma: Learn the basic principles and concepts of Lean Six Sigma, including its history and importance in process improvement and quality management.
  • Fundamental Tools and Techniques: Covers essential tools and techniques used in Lean Six Sigma, such as process improvement teams, process mapping, process waste analysis, and the Lean fundamental tools.
  • Understanding Roles and Responsibilities: Overview of the different roles within a Lean Six Sigma project, from White Belt to Black Belt, and how each contributes to the overall process.
  • Practical Applications: The training includes practical examples and case studies to help participants understand how Lean Six Sigma can be applied in real-world scenarios.

Topics Covered

The Six Sigma DMAIC methodology and basic Lean topics are introduced, including Takt time, 5S, Value Stream Mapping, Kanban, and Poka Yoke.


General Information

  • All classroom dates meet from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
  • Registration for all classes closes one week prior to their start date.

Course Credits

Participants receive Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits, which are required to maintain many professional licensures. OULI training also qualifies as PDU credits for Project Management Professionals.


Training Locations

Public classes are held at the Tinker Business Industrial Park at I-40 and Sooner Road. All public classes are open enrollment and typically feature an interesting mix of teams from a variety of industries.

  • Brian deFonteny: Creator of Leading with Lean, certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and adjunct professor with the University of Oklahoma.
  • Joyce Hinton: Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, primary instructor for the Institute’s LSS White and Green Belt training workshops.
  • Teresa Tobias: Certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, extensive experience at the strategic level working with leadership.
  • Larry Fisher: Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, instructor, and facilitator of multi-organizational improvement events.
