Program Overview
Doctoral Coursework
The doctoral coursework is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in their chosen field. The program consists of several components, including foundational core courses, major courses, minor courses, research proficiencies, and dissertation research.
Foundational Core (9 hours)
The foundational core courses provide a foundation for the doctoral program. The courses include:
- Interdisciplinary Educational Studies or Philosophy of Education (3 hours)
- EDS 5003 School & Society (course under revision)
- EDS 5033 Critical Literature in Adult & Higher Education
- EDS 5753 Educational Thought of John Dewey
- EDS 5783 Classics in Educational Thought
- History of Education (3 hours)
- EDS 5943 History of Race and Education in Oklahoma (course under revision) or EDS 6793 History of U.S. Education
- Sociology of Education (3 hours)
- EDS 5703 Sociology of Education or EDS 5913 Latinas/os and Education (course under revision)
Major (12 hours)
The major courses provide students with specialized knowledge in their chosen field. Students must complete a minimum of 12 hours in one of the following areas:
- Interdisciplinary Educational Studies (with a specified topical focus)
- Philosophy of Education
- History of Education
- Sociology of Education At least nine hours of the major must consist of EDS courses, but neither foundational core coursework nor research proficiencies coursework may count toward the major.
Minor (9 hours)
The minor courses provide students with additional knowledge in a field relevant to their major. Students must complete a minimum of nine hours in any field(s) directly relevant to the topical focus of the major and of the dissertation. Neither foundational core coursework nor research proficiencies coursework may count toward the minor.
Research Proficiencies (12 hours)
The research proficiencies courses provide students with the skills necessary to conduct research in their chosen field. Students must complete a minimum of 12 hours, including:
- Approaches to Educational Inquiry (9 hours minimum, three courses minimum)
- EDS 5013 Introduction to Educational Inquiry
- EDS 5023 Linguistic and Conceptual Analysis
- EIPT 5033 Introduction to Research & Evaluation
- EDS 6010 Writing Educational Inquiry
- EDS 6723 Race and Representation in Educational Research (course under revision)
- EDS 6013 – Gender, Knowledge and Inquiry
- EDS 6933 – Naturalistic and Qualitative Inquiry in Education
- EDS 6970 – Post Master's Seminar: Pro-Seminar
- EDS 6970 – Post Master's Seminar: Advanced Qualitative Inquiry in Education
- EDS 6973 – Historical Research Methods in Education
- Plans for Dissertation Inquiry (3 hours)
- EDS 6033 – Inquiry Design or EDAH/EACS 6970 Post Master's Seminar: Prospectus Development
Dissertation Research (6-15 hours)
The dissertation research provides students with the opportunity to conduct original research in their chosen field. Students must complete a minimum of six hours and a maximum of 15 hours of dissertation research.
Additional Coursework (33-42 hours)
The additional coursework provides students with the opportunity to complete any remaining hours necessary to meet the degree requirements. The remaining hours may include master's credit, additional electives, or other coursework.
Total Hours Required
The total hours required for the doctoral program is 90. The maximum number of dissertation hours is 15, and the minimum number of dissertation hours is six. Research proficiencies count as part of the hours for the degree.
