Introduction to Regional + City Planning

The Master’s in Regional + City Planning (RCPL) prepares students to shape communities through inclusive and sustainable design. Curriculum

  • Students are required to complete 44 credits for non-thesis students and 48 credits for thesis students.
  • The curriculum includes:
    • 23 credits core that covers the foundation of professional training in planning
    • 12 credits in the student’s specialization
    • 9 credits of electives
  • Students will select one of the two specializations:
    • Physical Planning
    • Community & Economic Development

Graduation Requirements

  • Non-Thesis Option:
    • Comprehensive Exam: Students sit for a comprehensive exam in their final semester.
    • Learning Portfolio: Non-thesis students are required to prepare a learning portfolio of their work within the program.
  • Thesis Option:
    • Requires a minimum of 48 credit hours, including 23 credits in the core curriculum, and 4 thesis credits.
    • A thesis is the product of individual research and should represent an original contribution to the academic field of knowledge.

Admissions Requirements

  • The program has rolling admissions.
  • The deadline for applicants to be considered for financial support for the following fall term is February 15 of each year for international applicants and March 1 for US-based applicants.
  • The GRE is not required.
  • Application requirements include:

    • An essay describing an urban issue in a city you are familiar with (min 2-pages)
