Program Overview

The Licenciatura en Bibliotecología y Estudios de la Información (Bachelor's Degree in Library Science and Information Studies) aims to train professionals in the organization, administration, and planning of information resources in libraries, documentation centers, and information centers. The program focuses on satisfying the information needs of various communities and institutions, contributing to the development of culture in its broadest sense.

Objective

The general objective of the program is to form professionals in Library Science with the purpose of organizing, conserving, and disseminating diverse products of human activities and promoting their use in Mexican society to contribute to the country's scientific, humanistic, artistic, technological, and educational development.

Plan of Studies

The plan of studies consists of 51 courses grouped into six areas, which are taken over eight semesters. 42 courses are obligatory, and nine are optional. The total number of credits is 360, with 324 corresponding to obligatory courses and 36 to optional ones.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, applicants must:

• Have obtained a minimum average of 7 in their high school diploma or its equivalent.
• Request admission according to the instructions and norms established in the calls for applications.
• Pass the admission exam to the UNAM and complete the registration procedures in a timely manner.

For UNAM students:

• Have completed high school in the Area of Humanities and Arts.
• Request admission according to the established instructions.

For applicants from other institutions:

• Have completed high school.
• Have a minimum average of 7 in their high school diploma or its equivalent.
• Pass the selection contest.
• Request admission according to the established instructions.

Profile of Applicants

It is desirable that applicants to the program have:

• Ability for independent study.
• Skill in using technological tools.
• Knowledge of computer basics (use of basic software).
• Ability in abstract thinking.
• Ability to express ideas in writing in an analytical and synthetic manner.
• Ability for research and taste for critical thinking.
• Understanding of English texts.
• Basic knowledge of mathematics.

Field of Work and Professional Practice

The scenarios where the services of information professionals are required are mainly located in public, private, and decentralized sector organizations, such as government agencies, educational institutions, international organizations, community-based organizations, banking and insurance, service and consulting companies, industry, research institutions, publishing and information industry, media and advertising. The work of the librarian in the aforementioned information units covers the following areas: information analysis; documentary analysis; administration of services, systems, and resources; adaptation and development of information technologies; production and marketing of information services and resources; and research and development.

Requirements for Graduation

To graduate, students must:

• Have taken and passed all the courses and have accredited 100% of the credits established in the Plan of Studies.
• Present a certificate of approval of the reading comprehension exam in a modern language (English, French, German, Portuguese, Italian) issued by the DELEFYL of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters or by the CELE or the UNAM.
• Present a certificate of having completed the Social Service.
• Have completed the preparation of a thesis, thesis, or academic report.
• Present and pass the professional exam, which consists of the oral defense of the thesis, thesis, or academic report.
