Course Objectives

  • General Objective: Apply the concepts derived from visual semiotics for the study of the image at different levels.
  • Specific Objectives:
    • Identify the categories of analysis and fundamental concepts of visual semiotics.
    • Delimit the variables and levels involved in the construction of an image.
    • Analyze the observable phenomena of the image and its epistemological implications.

Target Audience

The course is directed towards academics and students interested in semiotics, cognitive sciences, epistemology, and social sciences.


Curriculum

Theme I: Fundamental Problems. Image and Representation

  1. The image and the real representation of the world.
  2. Representing and denoting: the functions of the image.
  3. The image as discourse and text.
  4. The observer and the theoretical load.

Theme II: Models and Categories of Image Analysis

  1. Visual components: plastic semiotics and figurative semiotics.
  2. Visual attractors and cognition.
  3. Image and narrativity.
  4. Visual configuration and cultural references.

Instructor

Julio César Horta Gómez is a philosopher and communication scientist. He holds a degree in Communication Sciences from the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences and a degree in Philosophy from the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, UNAM. He completed his master's and doctoral studies in Philosophy of Science at the Institute of Philosophical Research, UNAM. He has collaborated on various research projects and has published several books and articles on topics related to philosophy of language, semiotics, art, and cultural heritage.
