Program Overview

The Doctorado en Geografía (Doctorate in Geography) is a postgraduate program offered by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The program aims to form doctors in Geography capable of conducting original research that contributes to the advancement of the geographical discipline, participating in the formation of new generations of geographers, and developing aptitudes for solving socio-environmental problems in a territorial context.

The objective of the Doctorado en Geografía is to form doctors in Geography who can:


  • Conduct original research of high level that contributes to the advancement of the geographical discipline
  • Participate in the formation of new generations of geographers
  • Develop aptitudes for solving socio-environmental problems in a territorial context

The program is structured into several areas of knowledge, including:


  • Sociedad y Territorio (Society and Territory)
  • Ordenamiento Territorial (Territorial Planning)
  • Geografía Ambiental (Environmental Geography)
  • Manejo Integrado del Paisaje (Integrated Landscape Management)
  • Geomática (Geomatics)

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, applicants must:


  • Possess a personal inclination for research, understood as the ability to discuss scientific problems and produce new scientific knowledge
  • Have sufficient geographical knowledge to identify, characterize, and articulate a disciplinary explanation for social problems, highlighting the role of geographical space
  • Be up-to-date with general debates within geographical thought and important theoretical approaches, particularly those used in doctoral research
  • Have basic knowledge of methodologies that can be used for research
  • It is desirable to have the ability to use, interpret, and elaborate cartographic material as a particular analysis tool

Profile of Graduates

Graduates of the Doctorado en Geografía will be capable of:


  • Conducting original and competitive research at an international level in the field of territorial analysis
  • Knowing in-depth the main discussions about the complex relationships between society and nature that modify the character and morphology of regions and places
  • Contributing to the development of their discipline through basic and applied research
  • Realizing research projects, evaluating results critically, and proposing alternatives and strategies for solving problems
  • Applying their knowledge in conducting studies and projects in the public or private sector
  • Forming human resources through teaching or directing theses, mainly at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels
