Program Overview
Marine Biology Program Overview
The Marine Biology program at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg provides students with a well-rounded degree that enhances their knowledge about life in the oceans, as well as their communication, research, and critical thinking skills.
Degree Options
- The College of Arts and Sciences offers a B.S. in Marine Biology on the St. Petersburg campus.
- Additional degree options are available on the USF Tampa campus.
Program Details
The St. Petersburg campus offers a wide variety of marine biology courses, ranging from the examination of invertebrates and vertebrates at the organismal level to marine ecology and faunal interactions within various ocean ecosystems. Students have the opportunity to explore different areas in marine biology that they may want to pursue at the graduate level or in the workforce.
Research Opportunities
Students have multiple opportunities for marine-related research, working with professors in the field and in laboratory settings on campus, as well as internships through partnerships with local and regional marine science-based organizations, including:
- Florida Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI)
- U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
- National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
- The Florida Aquarium
Faculty and Class Size
The faculty involved in the Marine Biology major have diverse marine-related backgrounds and active research programs, providing students with different perspectives and elective offerings. Small class sizes foster strong connections between students and faculty, allowing for multiple opportunities to work in laboratory settings.
Career Prospects
Past graduates have gone on to pursue graduate degrees in Marine Science, Marine Conservation, and related biological degrees, as well as secure employment in state, federal, and international marine-related organizations.
Requirements for the Major
Always refer to the Undergraduate Catalog for degree requirements. Students typically begin progress toward the major by taking at least one course from the major core, as these often serve as prerequisites for electives. Students are urged to consult with their advisor to create the most beneficial set of courses for success in the program.
