Program Overview

Bachelor Vergleichende germanische Sprachwissenschaft (Minor)

The German language, together with Scandinavian languages, English, Dutch, and Frisian, forms a language family that extends over a wide and diverse area and exhibits a great variety of dialects.

The origins of this language family date back a long time, and on the path to the present, each language and language region has undergone a unique and unmistakable history.

Comparative Germanic Linguistics deals with the historical languages, their history, and their written legacies, as well as with the linguistic and cultural processes that have shaped this history.

The Bachelor program in "Comparative Germanic Linguistics" provides:

  • introductory knowledge of linguistics and the methods of linguistic analysis
  • knowledge of the language history of German, English, Dutch, Frisian, and the Scandinavian languages from their earliest beginnings to the present day
  • knowledge of important historical language stages such as Gothic, Old High German, Old Norse, Old English, Old Saxon, and Old Frisian
  • basic knowledge of medieval literature that these languages have left behind, such as the Gothic Wulfila Bible, the Old English Beowulf, the Old Icelandic Edda, or the early Old High German monastic literature from St. Gallen

Career Prospects

The Bachelor's program in "Comparative Germanic Linguistics" prepares students for professional fields where careful analytical handling of linguistic and other data is required, such as in publishing, libraries, and publications, media public relations, and public communication.
