Program Overview

The Romanesque Seminar at the University of Zurich is one of the few institutes in Europe where Comparative Romance Linguistics can be studied as a standalone subject. It is represented here as a full-fledged major. For primarily linguistically interested Romanists who want to pursue their studies in a polyglot manner from the outset, it offers an ideal alternative to a single philology differentiated in language and literature science. Especially in multilingual Switzerland, where three out of four national languages are Romance languages, these study programs also offer numerous career opportunities.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the "Comparative Romance Linguistics" study program have perspectives in numerous fields of work where Romance multilingualism and analytical as well as communicative competencies are in demand. They master several Romance languages and are experts in the field of communication and intercultural mediation. They have learned to analyze complex structures and have methodological knowledge that can be applied to numerous questions.

Career Opportunities

  • They bring with them the prerequisites for numerous professional activities, such as:
    • In the cultural sector (museums, cultural institutions, international organizations)
    • In libraries, media libraries, and archives
    • In the media (press, radio, television, online portals)
    • In international organizations
    • In the private sector with internationally active companies
    • Wherever Romance multilingualism is in demand
    • For the mediation of Romance languages in adult education and the private education sector
    • And, after further training, in schools
    • And, not least, they have the prerequisite for further scientific training in the framework of a master's or doctoral program, which opens up further perspectives and, among other things, qualifies for activities in linguistic research institutions and universities.
