Program Overview

Leadership Program for Professors

The Leadership Program for Professors is designed to support professors in strengthening their leadership skills. The program provides a networking forum where participants can exchange ideas with colleagues at a comparable career stage.


Target Audience

The program is aimed at newly appointed UZH professors, providing support to ensure a successful transition into their new role. Other UZH professors who would like to refresh their leadership skills are also welcome to attend.


Structure and Contents

The Leadership Program is a continuing education program comprising both core and elective modules:


  • Introductory Module: "Professional Academic Leadership" provides evidence-based and practice-oriented support to help participants navigate everyday academic leadership responsibilities. Discussions will allow participants to reflect on their position as a leader at UZH and address the central requirements and success factors in an academic context, including self-leadership. The 2025 program will be conducted in English.
  • Advanced Modules: After completion of the Introductory Module, program participants take three specialized modules, in order to deepen core leadership competencies:
    • Financial Management at UZH (English, FS2026, date to follow)
    • Personnel Selection and Onboarding (English, FS2026, date to follow)
    • Finanzmanagement an der UZH (German, HS2026, date to follow)
    • Managing Teamwork Effectively (English, HS2026, date to follow)
  • Supplementary Modules: Program participants select three courses on the topic of leadership from the range of in-house continuing education courses for UZH staff. This allows for a thematic specialization according to individual needs:
    • Orientierung geben, Entwicklung fördern – Feedback in der Postdoc-Phase (German, 28.11.2025)
    • Professionals in supervision (English, 22./23.06.2026)
    • Umgang mit Konflikten im Arbeitsalltag an der UZH (German, 18.11.2025)
    • Grundlagen des Mitarbeitendengesprächs mit Beurteilung (MAG) (German, 19.11.2025)
    • Wissenschaftskommunikation: Professioneller Umgang mit Medienanfragen und Social Media (German, 21.11.2025)
    • Career Development (English, 04./05.02.2026)
    • Conflict Management (Upcoming course in 2026)
    • Managing Difficult Conversations (Upcoming course in 2026)
    • Leadership and Work-Life-Balance (Upcoming course in 2026)
    • Stress Management and Strengthening Resilience (Upcoming course in 2027)
  • Individual Coaching: Participants in the Leadership Program receive access to a maximum of three coaching sessions. This offers participants a solution-orientated opportunity to address specific and individual questions about the leadership process. The coaching can take the form of individual or group coaching, as desired. The coaches guarantee confidentiality. Coaching is available in German, English, and French.

Certificate Leadership Program

After successful completion of the entire program (introductory module, advanced modules, supplementary modules), Leadership Program participants will receive a certificate as proof of attendance. All courses within the program must be completed within 2 years.


Program Details

The Leadership Programme for Professors is free of charge for participants, as it is financed by the UZH. Attendance of the entire program is expected. Attendance of individual modules is only possible in exceptional circumstances.
