Modules, Module Groups, and Performance Records
All courses are part of a module or form their own module. There are three types of modules:
- Compulsory Modules (P), which are obligatory and must be completed once during the course of study;
- Elective Compulsory Modules (WP), which are not obligatory and can be taken at most once during the course of study (despite the name, there is no obligation to take WP modules in the Bachelor Popular Cultures);
- Elective Modules (W), which can be freely chosen.
The modules are grouped into module groups, which are relevant for the correct composition of the 120 ECTS points that make up the study program as a whole. To successfully complete the program, not only must all P-modules be covered, but the necessary minimum credit points per module group must also be achieved. The exact numbers are presented in the special part of the study regulations for Popular Cultures.
A detailed description of the modules and the corresponding examination forms (module catalog) can be found here.
Please also note the corresponding information sheet on module-specific performance records (PDF, 151 KB).
Structure of the Study Program and Graduation
The Major, with a scope of 120 ECTS points, begins with the module group "Introduction to Popular Cultures." Based on this, further W and WP modules are chosen from various module groups. In the so-called "model curriculum" (see link below), you can find an exemplary course of study. Which module group a particular course belongs to can be found in the course catalog (under the "Part of" tab). Special attention is given to the minimum credit points for the groups "Popular Literatures and Media," "Everyday Cultures," and "Empirical Cultural Research." The latter also includes the compulsory P-module "Reading, Understanding, and Discussing Cultural Theories." This is the only P-module between the introductory and final phases of the study. The study program ends with the Bachelor's colloquium and the Bachelor's thesis.
A sample representation of a typical study structure can be found in the model curriculum. Please note that this is only a recommendation; the course can also look different without any disadvantages.
