Program Overview
Introduction to the Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Studies
The Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Studies [BA(LS)] is an internationally recognised undergraduate degree offered by the Division of Landscape Architecture. This programme delivers a broadly comprehensive education in the landscape architecture discipline, teaching the knowledge, concepts, and skills required to respond creatively, professionally, and ethically to the urgent social and environmental challenges faced by our cities and regions today.
Curriculum
The BA(LS) education centres on the design studio — a collaborative and intense environment where students work closely with instructors on guided research and design strategies for a wide range of real-world and theoretical problems. The studio builds students' strengths in creative speculation, critical thinking, analytical methodologies, and iterative problem-solving. Students become adept at geospatial analysis, confident with digital tools and fabrication processes, and experts in a range of graphic media. Outside of the design studio, students take courses in landscape technology and ecology, the international history and core theories of landscape architecture, and visual communication.
Experiential Learning and International Exposure
Experiential learning and international exposure are key components of the BA(LS) education. Studio-based fieldwork and research trips are frequent, with courses taking students to sites across Hong Kong to see firsthand the diverse ecologies, communities, and processes that shape this high-density city. Students are encouraged to participate in international academic exchange for one semester of their study.
Career Prospects
The BA(LS) is a first degree that leads directly to the professional Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) degree required for registration as a landscape architect in Hong Kong. The programme also provides an excellent general arts education that will give students the confidence to enter other related design or research fields. Many graduates pursue specialised academic studies and research in landscape architecture or adjacent disciplines at The University of Hong Kong and other leading institutions in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America.
Employment Opportunities
Despite the challenging economic environment, the demand for landscape architecture has increased in recent years in response to rising awareness of environmental and quality of life issues. Many graduates join professional consultancy firms and work with landscape architects, architects, engineers, ecologists, and planners, or work as site supervisory staff, or in landscape management. Others work for government offices, non-profit organizations, and advocacy groups.
Minor in Landscape Studies
The Minor in Landscape Studies is designed for students in other disciplines to gain literacy in the core knowledge of landscape architecture.
