Master of Laws in Technology and Intellectual Property Law [LLM(T&IPL)]

Programme Overview

The principal objective of the LLM(T&IPL) programme is to offer a range of courses that provide a sound legal understanding of various aspects of the rapidly developing fields of technology law, intellectual property law, and the intersection between the two. This includes topics such as the legal and ethical implications of artificial intelligence, technology and legal services, competition law and the tech sector, big data, data mining, data protection, cybercrimes and security, regulation of Internet platforms, 3-D printing, nanotech, fintech, protection of computer programmes and algorithms, digital remixes and user-generated contents, as well as online streaming.


Programme Structure

  • Candidates are required to complete no fewer than 72 credits nor more than 78 credits, including a capstone course in accordance with the regulations for this degree and the syllabus.
  • Candidates must choose at least six courses from the Course List, including three compulsory courses, with one course from each of the three specialisations, along with one capstone course and at least two designated electives.

    • Artificial Intelligence and Related laws
  • Candidates may choose up to two other electives from courses not listed on the Course List below, but listed as Electives on the Course List for the General LLM programme.
  • Students should also pass all assessments with a Cumulative GPA of at least 1.50 in order to be recommended for graduation.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must comply with the General Regulations, the Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Curricula, and fulfil at least one of requirements (1) to (3) below AND (if applicable) requirement (4):


  1. Hold a degree of Bachelor of Laws with at least second class honours or an equivalent qualification accepted by the University for this purpose.
  2. Hold a degree in a discipline other than law with at least second class honours accepted by the University for this purpose and have at least two years relevant experience or professional qualifications.
  3. Have obtained either the Common Professional Examination of England and Wales or the Common Professional Examination Certificate of this University, provided that in either case a second class honours degree or a qualification of equivalent standard of this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose has also been obtained.
  4. For a candidate who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, shall satisfy the University English language requirement applicable to higher degrees as prescribed under General Regulation G2(b).
  • IELTS (Academic): An overall band of 7.0 or above
  • TOEFL (Internet-based Test): A score of 100 or above

Tuition Fees

  • Full-time: HK$220,000 p.a.
  • Part-time: HK$110,000 p.a.
  • Tuition fee for the academic year is under review.
