Program Overview

Introduction to French Program at HKU

The French program at HKU offers a comprehensive introduction to the French language and contemporary French culture. Students can learn to communicate in French and build a solid foundation, while also gaining insights into French society, cultural heritage, and lifestyle.

Program Structure

  • The program includes various courses, such as FREN1001 and FREN1002, designed for students with no prior experience in French.
  • The course offers a comprehensive introduction to the French language and contemporary French culture.
  • Students with prior knowledge of French will be guided through the registration process to determine the most suitable course for their level.

Admission Criteria

  • Priority for admission is given to:
    • Y1 and Y2 Bachelor of Arts students (BA) who have enrolled in FREN1001 AND FREN1002.
    • Y2 BA and Non-BA students who have declared a major in GLAS or a minor in French, and have enrolled in both FREN1001 AND FREN1002.
  • Note: Due to high demand, we cannot accept Year 3 and above applicants.

Application Process

  • French is a popular choice at HKU, and places are limited. FREN1001 will admit up to 125 students for the 2025–2026 academic year.
  • Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
  • If the application is not approved in the first round, students may apply again during the second round (Add/Drop Period, beginning September 2025).

Program Details

  • The Minor in French and the Major in Global and Area Studies (GLAS) are available.
  • A list of French courses is offered, and students can download the timetable of French courses.
  • The program provides opportunities for experiential learning, personalized learning paths, internships, and overseas French courses.
  • Scholarships and prizes are available for students.
