Program Overview
The Advanced Certificate in Child and Adolescent Nutrition aims to provide students with knowledge in childhood and adolescent nutrition. This program has articulation routes to degree-level courses in nutrition and offers an opportunity for those interested in nutrition to build and develop their nutrition knowledge.
Program Details
- Program Outline: The program consists of two modules:
- Module A: Nutrition for Children and Adolescents
- Patterns of growth and development
- Assessment of nutritional status and nutritional requirements during infancy, childhood, and adolescence
- Adolescent pregnancy
- Nutritional needs of the child athlete
- Vegetarianism
- Diet and oral health in children and adolescents
- Nutrition education and health promotion
- Tuck shop management and school meals, including menu planning
- Module B: Nutrition for Children and Adolescents with Special Needs
- Obesity and overweight
- Underweight/growth failure
- Swallowing and feeding disorders in children
- Iron deficiency and anemia
- Nutrition and diet in childhood diseases (e.g., respiratory disorders, including asthma, diabetes)
- Diet and autism and epilepsy
- Eating disorders
- Food intolerance and food allergy
- Module A: Nutrition for Children and Adolescents
- Mode of Delivery: The program will be delivered through lectures, face-to-face seminars, and class-integrative discussions.
Articulation Pathways
Students who complete the Advanced Certificate in Child and Adolescent Nutrition and relevant programs offered by HKU SPACE are eligible for entry into the two-year part-time BSc (Hons) Food and Nutrition extension program offered by HKU SPACE in collaboration with the Ulster University, U.K.

- Entry Requirements:
- Applicants shall:
- Hold a bachelor's degree awarded by a recognized university; or
- Hold a Higher Diploma awarded by a recognized institution with at least two years of working experience; or
- Hold an Advanced Certificate in Nutrition awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE
- And provide evidence of English proficiency, such as:
- Having gained in the HKCEE Grade E or Level 2* in English Language (Syllabus B); or
- Having gained in the HKDSE Level 2 in English Language

Additional Information
- Students with no nutrition background are recommended to take the Advanced Certificate in Nutrition (HS001A) prior to the commencement of the Advanced Certificate in Child and Adolescent Nutrition.
- Students with no science background are recommended to take the HKU SPACE Human Biology and Organic Chemistry I/II short courses (SC398A and SC399A) prior to commencing the Advanced Certificate in Nutrition/Clinical Nutrition and Health Promotion/Child and Adolescent Nutrition.
