Statistics and Data Science, MA
The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania offers a Master of Arts in Statistics and Data Science. This program is designed to provide advanced coursework and research experience to students who need additional preparation for admission to a doctoral program.
Bridge MA to Doctorate
Wharton’s Bridge to a Doctorate in Statistics and Data Science is a two-year research master’s degree program. It provides students with an individualized curriculum built around their interests and goals. The program seeks to prepare students for a doctoral program by providing strong mentorship and a learning environment dedicated to teaching methods of statistical modeling for effective decision making.
Curriculum
The curriculum for the Statistics and Data Science, MA program includes:
- Coursework at the 5000-Level-and-Above approved by the student's faculty mentor: 6 course units
- Coursework with statistical content at the 4000-Level-and-Above approved by the student's faculty mentor: 4 course units
- Non-course requirements:
- Master's Final Exam
- Master's Thesis
- Total course units: 10
Students are encouraged to pursue a Master's Level Independent Studies, STAT 9999, with approval from the student's faculty mentor.
Dual MA for PhD Students
The Dual AM Degree in Statistics and Data Sciences is offered only to students enrolled in a Ph.D. program at Penn. While some courses can count towards both a PhD and research master’s degree, no courses can count towards three or more degree programs at Penn. The Master's degree cannot be granted after the PhD is awarded.
Curriculum for Dual MA
The curriculum for the Dual MA program includes:
- Select 6 course units from 5000 level or 9000 level Statistics and Data Science Department Courses
- 4 additional course units of approved Penn courses with statistical content
- Master's Thesis: an approved master’s thesis that makes substantial use of statistics
- Certification of Doctoral Qualifying Exam
- Total course units: 10
