Program Overview

The Art with Time-Based + Media Art Concentration, BFA program at Washington University in St. Louis is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in art and design, combining studies in architecture, business, humanities, natural and social sciences, and other arts. The program requires a total of 121 units, with specified credits in each area.


Distribution Requirements

  • Writing (3 units): Students must complete a College Writing course with a C- or better during the first year of study.
  • Humanities (3 units): Humanities courses examine the human condition, including literature, Classics, History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies.
  • Natural Sciences or Mathematics (3 units): These courses help students understand the natural and physical world using objective and empirical observation and controlled experimentation.
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences (3 units): These courses explore the social environment, relationships with society, and forms of human behavior.

Art History and Visual Culture

  • The BFA degree requires two 3-credit introductory courses:
    • ARTARCH 1515 History of Western Art, Architecture & Design
    • ARTARCH 2020 Introduction to Modern Art, Architecture and Design
  • Three additional courses are required, which can be selected from Art History and Archaeology (ARTARCH) at the 2000-level or above, or courses tagged FA Visual Culture.

Foundations

  • The following courses are required:
    • ART 1050 Drawing I
    • ART 1110 2D Design
    • ART 1120 3D Design
    • DESIGN 1210 Digital Studio
    • ART 1101 Practices in Art + Design

Sam Fox Electives

  • Students must complete 12 units of Sam Fox Electives, which can be any courses in ART, DESIGN, FASHION, ARCH, LANDARCH, or URBDES.

Open Electives

  • Students must complete 30 units of Open Electives, which can be any courses in the following schools: Sam Fox, Arts & Sciences, Business, or Engineering.

Major and Concentration Requirements

  • The BFA Majors in Art can choose to concentrate in one of the following five areas: Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, or Time-Based + Media Art.
  • A concentration requires one Intro Art course and four Art Practice courses in the area of concentration.
  • The following courses are required for the Time-Based + Media Art Concentration:
    • Sophomore Intro Art Studio Requirements (6 units)
    • Junior/Senior Art Practice Studios (21 units)
    • Other Major Requirements (6 units)
    • Capstone Studio I & II (6 units)

Additional Requirements

  • A maximum of 15 non-Washington University units (including Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and transfer credit) is permitted.
  • No more than 9 units may be applied to physical education, lessons, independent study, and internships.
  • No units from the School of Continuing & Professional Studies will be accepted.
