The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Nursing offered by the Ingram School of Nursing in the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences is a research-intensive program that emphasizes rigorous and collaborative learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in critical reading, original thinking, and scientific communication to pursue professional opportunities in academia or industry.
Program Description
Our nursing faculty lead cutting-edge research in a wide range of fields including implementation science, psychosocial oncology, digital health, pediatric nursing, pain, public health, and nursing administration, offering a rich variety of learning and research opportunities. Graduates from McGill’s doctoral program in Nursing have assumed leadership roles in nursing research, academia, and health care administration across Canada, including Deans/directors of nursing programs, provincial nursing officers, executive managers of health networks, and award-winning nurse scholars.
Unique Program Features
- The program focuses on the development of advanced skills in critical thinking, scholarly communication, and the conduct of rigorous research related to the student's selected topic of inquiry.
- The program is open to nurses with either an undergraduate or graduate degree in Nursing, or students who have completed a two-year master’s program in Nursing or a related field.
- The learning experience at the School is geared towards fostering individual judgment, creativity, and initiative.
- The School is led by nationally recognized researchers and clinicians, students will participate in cutting-edge programs of research and knowledge translation projects related to nursing practice and administration.
Admission Requirements
- Completion of master’s level studies with:
- a degree in nursing (either undergraduate or graduate),
- OR
- an interest in pursuing research related to nursing practice, education or administration.
- Minimum cGPA of 3.3 or higher on a scale of 4.0 (i.e., B+ or 75% average), in your undergraduate and graduate programs.
- English-language proficiency.
