Program Overview

Program Overview

The BS in Data Science to MS in Bioinformatics program is designed for highly qualified students and typically takes four-and-a-half to five years to complete.

Program Requirements

This Bachelor’s-to-Master’s program requires a minimum of 152 units. Students may count 8 units from the BS (128 units) toward the MS (32 units). The requirements for the Bachelor’s-to-Master’s program are:

  • All CDS Data Science BS major requirements
  • All CDS Bioinformatics MS requirements

Students pursuing this program are encouraged to take ENG BF 527 and ENG BF 550 while enrolled as undergraduates, as the two courses that may count toward the MSBF. Students may substitute different ENG BF or CDS DS electives with program approval.

Program Structure

Bachelor’s-to-Master’s Programs are linked bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in which the two degrees are conferred sequentially. The units applied toward the master’s degree must be at the 500 level or above. Students must apply to Bachelor’s-to-Master’s Programs before the conferral of the bachelor’s degree. Typically, students apply to the Bachelor’s-to-Master’s Program in Bioinformatics in their junior year via the normal application process. Students in the Bachelor’s-to-Master’s Program in Bioinformatics must complete at least 24 units while enrolled as a graduate student.

Additional Information

Students should consult with the Financial Assistance office to learn how entrance into the Bachelor’s-to-Master’s Program might impact their financial aid. Boston University is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).
