Program Overview

This program is designed for students who seek advanced interdisciplinary study in education. Teachers who already hold an initial license often select this program to develop a CAGS program that includes both advanced liberal arts and advanced professional education study. With the guidance of an academic advisor, students may select courses either to further develop one aspect of their profession or to expand their teaching into a new area. Some students select this program because they want to study schools and the profession of teaching without pursuing a license for teaching.

Program Description

Curriculum planning and carefully designed teaching methods are fundamental to providing quality education in our nation’s schools. Students in the CAGS in Curriculum & Teaching program dedicate themselves to learning about the complex issues of contemporary education as they prepare to be outstanding leaders in teaching and supervisory positions.

The program emphasizes the professional talents of planning and designing instruction, creating comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum, broadening and deepening the knowledge base of one’s teaching, and evaluating the results of teaching. The goal of the program is to graduate educators who are knowledgeable and innovative in a demanding and rewarding profession.

Program Requirements

• Total units: 32
  • Core Coursework (16 units)
    • 1 course in research (4 units)
    • 3 courses in Curriculum & Teaching (any WED courses with the prefix CT, SO, SC, ME, EN, CH, EC, SE, HE, PE, EM, CL, LS, LR, LW, BI, TL, WL, or DE) (12 units)
  • Elective Coursework (16 units)
    • Students complete 16 units of elective coursework. Elective coursework is chosen in consultation with an academic advisor. With advisor approval, electives may include courses at the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.
  • Additional Requirement(s)
    • CAGS candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive examination as a part of the CAGS degree. Students must file a formal application for the examination with the Program Director and faculty advisor.
