International Dermatopathology Certificate of Achievement Program

The International Dermatopathology Certificate of Achievement Program (IDCP) at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine is designed to address the critical need for training international physicians in dermatopathology. This program aims to enhance healthcare services in their home countries by providing state-of-the-art education in dermatopathology.

Program Description

This training program is designed for international physicians with dermatology or pathology training who are committed to returning to their respective countries to advance patient care. The program spans one year, comprising two semesters, and integrates rigorous coursework with practical research opportunities. Students will learn to formulate International Review Board (IRB) proposals, conduct comprehensive literature and case reviews using various databases, and employ ancillary diagnostic tools such as special stains, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry for research projects. There are no patient service responsibilities.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, the trainee will have knowledge of basic dermatopathology and:

• Be able to recognize and interpret inflammatory (non-neoplastic) as well as common benign and malignant neoplasms of skin.
• Learn and be able to use ancillary techniques to assist in diagnosis and research (i.e., immunofluorescence, immunoperoxidase studies, and special stains).
• Be able to present evidence-based material at various conferences in a clear, concise manner.
• Learn basic research tools, be able to write an IRB proposal, and learn to search various databases for the purposes of an in-depth literature or case review.
• Become proficient in teaching and thereby further enhance knowledge in dermatopathology.

Upon completion, trainees will qualify to take the International Board Certification in Dermatopathology. Equipped with advanced skills, they will be empowered to establish educational, research, and patient-care initiatives in dermatopathology within their international communities.

Application Requirements

Candidates need to have graduated from a medical school and completed training in dermatology or pathology in their home country or another country outside of the United States of America.

• TOEFL scores are required as part of the application. The minimum score requirements for international trainees are 575 for the paper-based test, 232 for computer-based test, and 90 for the internet-based test.
