Elementary Education Certificate Program
The Elementary Education Certificate program is designed to prepare students to work with children in grades K-8 in an educational setting. This certificate program can be added to the following majors in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College: BAE in early childhood education, BAE in secondary education, and BAE in special education.
Program Description
The program focuses on teaching and learning practices that foster equitable access and outcomes for culturally and linguistically diverse students and learners with special needs and exceptionalities. Students engage in innovative coursework grounded in theory-based strategies and evidence-based practices for teaching.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes the following required courses:
- EED 324: Social Studies Methods and the Arts (3 credit hours, minimum grade C)
- EED 411: Science in Elementary Schools (3 credit hours, minimum grade C)
- EED 412: Mathematics in Elementary Schools (4 credit hours, minimum grade C)
- EED 433: Writing in the 21st Century (3 credit hours, minimum grade C)
- RDG 413: Elementary Methods for Literacy Instruction and Assessment (4 credit hours, minimum grade C)
- TEL 331: Foundations of Literacy: The Science of Reading (3 credit hours, minimum grade C)
Enrollment Requirements
This certificate is open only to students majoring in early childhood education, special education, or secondary education undergraduate teacher preparation programs in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. Students are required to have a valid Arizona DPS Identity Verified Prints fingerprint clearance card. A GPA of 2.00 is required for continued good standing.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College are highly sought-after teachers in public, charter, and private education institutions. Many graduates with degrees in elementary education also work at community organizations that serve children and youth.
Professional Licensure
ASU programs that may lead to professional licensure or certification are intended to prepare students for potential licensure or certification in Arizona. Completion of an ASU program may not meet educational requirements for licensure or certification in another state.
Format Option
This program is also offered via ASU Sync, which enables students to attend live classes remotely via Zoom. Classes are designed to foster active collaboration and discussion in real-time with faculty and peers. ASU Sync students need to reside in Arizona throughout the duration of the program. Students on F-1 or J-1 immigration status are not permitted to complete courses via Sync and should speak with an advisor about other options to complete this program.
