Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Certificate Program
The certificate program in hazardous materials and waste management provides current and prospective employees of industry and government with a comprehensive and practical curriculum of study in hazardous materials management. The program features instruction by faculty, attorneys, and professionals who work in the specific area in which they teach.
Program Description
Students enrolled in this program are offered several industry-required courses by the environmental and resource management professional development program targeted at environmental professionals who engage in management and transportation of hazardous materials and waste. These training courses are provided to certificate students at less than 15% of the actual cost to support their professional development.

Curriculum
The curriculum includes the following courses:
- ERM 203 Environmental Regulations (3 Credit Hours, Minimum Grade: C)
- ERM 401 Hazardous Waste Management (3 Credit Hours, Minimum Grade: C)
- ERM 406 Environmental Chemistry (3 Credit Hours, Minimum Grade: C)
- ERM 407 Occupational Hygiene (3 Credit Hours, Minimum Grade: C)
- Upper Division ERM Elective Recommended: ERM 402 or ERM 432 (6 Credit Hours, Minimum Grade: C)
Enrollment Requirements
The certificate in hazardous materials and waste management is available to all ASU students in good standing, except those pursuing any program in environmental and resource management. To add the certificate in hazardous materials and waste management, a student must hold, at minimum, junior status and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00.
Program Learning Outcomes
Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program’s learning outcomes include the following:
- Evaluate environmental policies and regulations that apply to environmental and resource management.
- Apply management, scientific, and technical solutions to natural and anthropogenic environmental problems.
Career Opportunities
Graduates with the skills gained in this certificate program are in high demand and can find work in industry, governmental management and regulatory agencies, and policymaking organizations. Graduates are firmly grounded in the scientific, technical, and legal problems facing hazardous waste managers in today's business climate. They are prepared to be waste, health, and safety professionals in industrial settings such as manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, and in environmental engineering consulting firms. They also ensure compliance with OSHA and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requirements in manufacturing operations, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and local governments. On the regulatory side, graduates work for agencies such as the EPA and state and county departments of environmental quality.
