Overview of the Nurse Education in Academic and Practice Settings Graduate Certificate

The Nurse Education in Academic and Practice Settings Graduate Certificate is designed to equip experienced health care professionals with the skills needed to teach nursing in academic or practice settings. This certificate is a nondegree, 15-credit-hour program of study offered to full- or part-time students.


Program Details

  • The selected courses for study complement the master’s and doctorate degrees in nursing and advanced nursing practice.
  • If enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Nursing Practice program, students can take the certificate courses as electives.
  • The certificate’s curriculum is the foundation for the Master of Science in nursing with a concentration in nursing education degree, which is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

What You’ll Learn

In this nursing education certificate program, students will cover curriculum creation, course design, and program evaluation. The program eases the transition into education and positions students as stronger candidates for future jobs. Students will take courses on:

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation. Requirements include:


  • A minimum of a master’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of the first bachelor’s degree program or in an applicable master’s degree program
  • Submission of:
    • Graduate admission application and application fee
    • Official transcripts
    • Resume
    • Proof of English proficiency

Additional Application Information

  • An applicant whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of current residency.
  • Licensure requirements:
    • An RN licensure is not required for admission to the nurse education in academic and practice settings certificate program.
    • However, admitted students who are registered nurses must hold a current unencumbered RN license in the state in which they plan to do clinical practicums to remain in the program.
  • Health and safety requirements:
    • Students recommended for admission must meet health and safety requirements by established deadlines, including a passing disposition on a background clearance, satisfactory completion of a substance screen, and other requirements, as a condition of admission.
