Biotechnology Program Overview
Brown University’s one or two-year, on-campus master’s in biotechnology immerses students in the cutting-edge science and dynamic industry of biotech. The master’s in biotechnology program engages students in a dynamic learning environment with hands-on experiences and close collaboration with Brown's expert faculty to closely examine the scientific foundations and industrial applications of biotechnology.
Program Structure
The program offers multiple degree options:
- Master of science (Sc.M.): Coursework and thesis
- Master of arts (A.M.): Coursework only (non-thesis) Students can pursue this program full-time or part-time and participate in a management track or a paid co-op program.
Curriculum
The interdisciplinary curriculum, tailored for students with diverse scientific backgrounds, including life sciences, biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, physics, and chemistry, allows students to explore a range of topics related to the field of biotechnology, including:
- Drug discovery and therapeutics
- Drug and gene delivery

Application Requirements
- GRE Subject: Not required
- GRE General: Not required
- TOEFL/IELTS: Minimum scores for each are: 100 (TOEFL), 8 (IELTS)
- Official Transcripts: Required
- Letters of Recommendations: Three (3) letters of recommendation. Two (2) letters of recommendation for current Brown undergraduates (5th-year applicants).
- Personal Statement: Please tell us in 1500 words or less why you are interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in Biotechnology at Brown, how your past academic and professional experiences have prepared you to succeed, and any specific areas and topics you are interested in studying further at Brown.

Tuition and Funding

- Scholarships: Limited scholarships are available for international and domestic students.
Completion Requirements
A minimum of 8 tuition units are required. Students must receive a grade of B or better, and courses must be taken for a grade rather than credit
o credit. The Program Director endorses the student’s proposed curriculum.
