Introduction to the Medical Sciences Program

The Medical Sciences program at Brown University is a one-year, on-campus master of science degree that provides students with new pathways to medical school and successful careers in other health sciences fields. This special master's program (SMP) is part of Brown's Gateways Program at the Warren Alpert Medical School, recognized as a national leader in medical education and biomedical research.

The program offers a Master of Science (Sc.M.) degree, which includes coursework and a community-based capstone project. The multifaceted curriculum combines hands-on experience with a rigorous foundation in biomedical science, with several courses taken alongside first-year medical school students.

Application Requirements

To apply to the Medical Sciences program, students must submit:


  • Official MCAT score within the last 2-3 years (highly preferred) or a full-length, timed recent practice MCAT
  • Official college transcript
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement and brief supplemental essay
  • Resume/CV
  • Additional requirements:
    • Graduated or on-track to graduate from a U.S. college or university
    • Completed pre-med/pre-health coursework
    • Minimum GPA 3.0
    • Application fee (non-refundable)

Application Process

The application process includes rolling interview invitations (via Zoom) and rolling admissions, with a limited class size. The application deadline is May 15, 2026.


Completion Requirements

The Brown ScM in Medical Sciences Gateways program is an approved 1-year, full-time program of study consisting of 8.5 required courses, including a community-based capstone project.


Program Outcomes

Historically, 86-97% of each class from this program applies to medical school, and 94% of those who apply gain admission (based on six years of data). Others pursue a variety of career paths in the healthcare field.
