Master's Programme in History

The Master's programme in History at the University of Groningen provides insight into current issues from a historical perspective, with an emphasis on practical applications of academic historical knowledge and skills.

Programme Description

The programme addresses questions such as what should be done with statues related to Europe's colonial past, how historians can help tackle problems within organizations, and how societies historically cope with crises. It offers three tracks: History and Heritage Consultancy, Politics, Organizations and Learning Histories, and Un/sustainable Societies: Past, Present and Future.

Tracks

• History and Heritage Consultancy: This track teaches students how to expertly approach questions about the meaning and uses of (contested) heritage, with a dual focus on historical analysis of heritage and professional skills required for working in the heritage and public sector.
• Politics, Organizations and Learning Histories: This track prepares students to answer questions about the inner workings of organizations and how historical knowledge and skills can contribute to detecting blind spots in organizations and improving their effectiveness and social impact.
• Un/sustainable Societies: Past, Present and Future: This track teaches students to utilize historical knowledge and methods to address contemporary developments regarding the (un)sustainability of societies, making them experts in this field.

Programme Structure

Each Master's track is characterized by a flagship course and matching methodological courses that train students in acquiring and applying historical knowledge. Students participate in a Masterclass that instructs them in various professional skills, research seminars to gain in-depth knowledge of specific historical themes, and can graduate with a Master's thesis or project.

Study Abroad

A study period abroad can be combined with the placement and/or the Master's final assignment. Students can follow a seminar at a university abroad.

Entry Requirements

• Previous education: A Bachelor's degree in History or a Bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Groningen with a successfully completed Minor in History (max. 30 ECTS).
• Language test: English proficiency is required, with a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 90 or IELTS score of 6.5.

Transfer Options

Transfer options are available from other universities, including pre-master programmes with a maximum of 30 EC.

Application Deadlines

• Dutch students: 15 January for the February start, 15 August for the September start.
• EU/EEA students: 1 May for the September start, 15 October for the February start.
• Non-EU/EEA students: 1 May for the September start, 15 October for the February start.

Tuition Fees

• EU/EEA students: €2,601 for the full-time programme.
• Non-EU/EEA students: €19,200 for the full-time programme.

Job Prospects

Graduates can find work in journalism, museums, cultural organizations, publishing, politics, governmental organizations, or business. They can work as journalists, editors, policy advisors, officers, teachers, communications advisors, researchers, managers, curators, or advisors.

Research

The University of Groningen's international teaching staff are members of the Centre for Historical Studies, which is devoted to research on a wide range of aspects of historical investigation. Research interests focus on the cultural, social, political, and economic diversity of Western societies and expand to the non-Western world.

Study Associations

Ubbo Emmius is the study association of the History department at the University of Groningen, organizing social, study-related, career, and other activities for students.
