Introduction to the Master's Track History and Heritage Consultancy
The Master's track History and Heritage Consultancy at the University of Groningen is a unique program that focuses on the dual aspects of historical analysis of heritage and professional skills required for working in the heritage and public sectors. This track is designed to equip students with the expertise and tools to interpret and reflect on the meaning of historical heritage, implement their knowledge practically, and develop excellent analytical writing and reading skills.
Program Description
The Master's track History and Heritage Consultancy offers a broad range of methodological and research courses, allowing students to specialize in their personal field of interest and flexibility in their planning. Students learn to interrogate the complexities of history and heritage present in buildings, objects, practices, customs, and opinions of the past. They also develop relevant professional skills, such as effective communication, grant writing, and project management, which prepare them for immediate employment in the field of history and heritage.
Program Structure
The program consists of various courses, including:
- Atelier Living Heritage: a flag course that focuses on theories of heritage, aspects of heritage consultancy, and the conveyance of historical knowledge to broader audiences and new contexts.
- Masterclass: a course that trains students in practical skills, such as pitching projects, project management, and grant writing, in preparation for entering the job market.
- Methodological courses: students choose a number of methodological courses to enhance their historical skills, such as Oral History, The Uses of the Past, Archives, or Visual and Material Sources.
- Research seminar: students develop their skills by taking a research seminar, which offers an in-depth analysis of a specific topic.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the Master's track History and Heritage Consultancy, students must have:
- A Bachelor's degree in History
- A Bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Groningen, with a successfully completed Minor in History (max. 30 ECTS)
- English language proficiency: a VWO diploma or a subject certificate for VWO English (mark 6 or higher), minimum requirement of TOEFL iBT 90 (with a minimum of 21 on all items), or IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6 on all items), or Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency.
