Program Overview
The Master's program in Media, Cultural Industries and Innovation at the University of Groningen is a full-time, 18-month program that explores how media are produced and reused in the digital era. The program focuses on the intersection of media, culture, and innovation, providing students with a solid theoretical foundation and practical skills to work in the cultural and creative industries.
Program Description
The program delves into the transformations in the digital society, cultures of media creativity, formats, and use, providing students with a thorough understanding of the developments in media from the analogue to the digital era. Students will acquire knowledge of digital formats and storytelling, media innovation and entrepreneurship, excellent creative, communication, and writing skills, and research skills for analyzing media production, content, use, and audiences.
Curriculum
The program consists of various courses, including:
- Year 1: Courses on transformations in the digital society, cultures of media creativity, formats, and use, as well as methods courses and professional skills courses.
- Year 2: Students write their MA thesis and apply their knowledge and skills in an internship.
- The specific courses for this track are currently under development, but they will focus on theories of media production and practice, studying audiences, users, and media content, and innovation and entrepreneurial culture.
Entry Requirements
To be admitted to the program, students must meet the following requirements:
- Previous education: Students with a BA degree in Media Studies from the University of Groningen are directly admitted to the program. Students with any other BA degree need to have at least 30 ECTS credit points from course units from the Minor in Media Studies provided by the University of Groningen, or course units equivalent to these in content followed at a different university.
- Language test: Additional English language requirement, including a Dutch VWO diploma or Dutch VWO English certificate, minimum TOEFL requirement, or IELTS 7.
- Other admission requirements: Students with a BA degree from a University of Applied Sciences (HBO) cannot apply directly for the MA Media Studies, track Media, Cultural Industries and Innovation, and must complete a pre-Master's first.
Tuition Fees
The tuition fees for the program are as follows:
- EU/EEA students: € 2601 (full-time)
- Non-EU/EEA students: € 19200 (full-time)
- Important note: The master track Media, Cultural Industries & Innovation is a 18 months master program (1.5 years), which means that students pay 1.5 times more tuition fee.
