Program Overview


NC Teach@NC State

The NC Teach@NC State program is a 3-semester Residency Licensure teacher education program designed to train, support, and retain mid-career professionals as they become licensed teachers in North Carolina.

The program is part-time and consists of 6 education classes completed in 3 semesters. NC TEACH can be started in either Spring or Summer. There is no Fall start.


Eligibility

Candidates must be currently teaching as a full-time teacher in one of the subject areas offered by the program.


  • Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with at least a 2.70 minimum GPA.
  • Candidates must have either 24 hours OR the Praxis II in their subject area (both are required for full licensure).

English 9-12 or Language Arts 6-9

  • At least 24 hours in English, Literature, Writing, Composition, Language, Grammar, or Rhetoric
  • One of the following to meet the initial eligibility “content” criteria:
    • A “relevant” degree in subject area or
    • 24 hours in subject area or
    • Passing Praxis II scores on the appropriate exams
  • Specialty Requirements
    • 3 courses in Composition, Writing, or Grammar
    • 3 courses in literature
    • 1 course in the literature of a specific Author or Genre
    • 1 course of an additional English elective

Math 6-9 and 9-12

  • At least 24 hours in Mathematics or Statistics
  • One of the following to meet the initial eligibility “content” criteria:
    • A “relevant” degree in subject area or
    • 24 hours in subject area or
    • Passing Praxis II scores on the appropriate exams
  • Specialty Requirements
    • Calculus I
    • Calculus II
    • Geometry
    • Linear Algebra
    • Abstract Algebra
    • Statistics
    • Any 2 Math electives

Science 6-9 and 9-12

  • At least 24 hours in science, such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, or Zoology
  • One of the following to meet the initial eligibility “content” criteria:
    • A “relevant” degree in subject area or
    • 24 hours in subject area or
    • Passing Praxis II scores on the appropriate exams
  • Specialty Requirements
    • 2 courses in Earth Science
    • 2 courses in Biology
    • 2 courses in Chemistry
    • 2 courses in Physics

Social Studies 6-9 and 9-12

  • At least 24 hours in History, Political Science, Economics, and/or Geography
  • One of the following to meet the initial eligibility “content” criteria:
    • A “relevant” degree in subject area or
    • 24 hours in subject area or
    • Passing Praxis II scores on the appropriate exam
  • Specialty Requirements
    • US History Pre 1865
    • US History Post 1865
    • Economics
    • Political Science
    • World History
    • History of a non-Western Culture
    • Geography
    • Any Social Studies Elective

Technology, Engineering, and Design Education

  • At least 24 hours in Technology, Engineering, and Design Education
  • One of the following to meet the initial eligibility “content” criteria:
    • A “relevant” degree in subject area or
    • 24 hours in subject area or
    • Passing Praxis II scores on the appropriate exam

World Languages

  • A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with at least a 2.5 minimum GPA
  • Pass the Praxis II in French or Spanish
  • Specialty Requirements
    • French Licensure Applicants
      • All applicants must take and pass the Praxis II test in French with a score of 162 prior to applying for NC TEACH.
      • The test code for French: World Language is 5174.
      • No specific coursework is required
    • Spanish Licensure Applicants
      • All applicants must take and pass the Praxis II test in Spanish with a score of 168 prior to applying for NC TEACH.
      • The test code for Spanish: World Language is 5195.
      • No specific coursework is required
    • Chinese Licensure Applicants
      • All applicants must score an intermediate high on the ACTFL Chinese.
    • Bilingual / ESL / Foreign Language Teacher

Application Process

  • Complete the online application.
  • The application will require:
    • Electronic copies of official academic transcripts (undergraduate, postbac., and graduate).
    • Two references
    • If applicable: Copies of Praxis II scores, TOEFL scores, and/or your Emergency license or hiring contract.

Additional Considerations

  • Applications cannot be reviewed until all materials are received. If any items are missing, it will delay the review process and admissions.
  • Because of the high volume of inquiries during the application periods, the NC TEACH staff cannot evaluate transcripts without an application.
  • Candidates may be asked to interview with the NC TEACH or College of Education faculty.
  • Applications may be deferred up to one semester. After one semester, candidates must resubmit an application to NC TEACH.

North Carolina State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award the associate, baccalaureate, masters and doctorate degrees.
