The Ancient History degree programme at Heidelberg University focuses on the study of ancient Greek and Roman cultures, as well as the predominantly Christian period of late Antiquity, spanning from approximately 1,000 B.C.E. to 700 C.E.

Course Content

Students in the Bachelor’s degree programme in Ancient History will become acquainted with basic knowledge of the historical events and geography of Classical Antiquity. They will also gain insight into the most important methods of historical analysis and interpretation. Students pursuing the degree programme as a major subject will gain proficiency in collecting, critically discussing, and forming a contextually-relevant assessment of historical source materials. On the basis of selected topics, students will gain an in-depth understanding of historical interrelationships. In addition, working with the faculties of related subject disciplines, they will practice interdisciplinary approaches to their work. In addition to these professional qualifications, graduates will have gained a wide range of key competencies:

• They will have the ability to independently process complex topics in a results-oriented manner.
• They will have obtained experience working in an interdisciplinary and multi-language environment.
• They will have gained experience in assessing multi-cultural interrelationships.
• They will be capable of analysing political and societal structures.
• Their mastery of verbal and oral expression, gained through practice of these skills, will allow them to develop audience-specific presentation forms that make use of current multimedia.

Course Structure

The Bachelor's degree programme normally runs for six semesters. The degree programme is divided into two phases of three semesters each: an introductory phase and an advanced phase. Prior to beginning the advanced phase, documentation of the required language skills must be submitted (English, a second modern foreign language, and the Latinum (a certificate of Latin proficiency)). Language proficiency that has not been obtained at the time that studies are undertaken may be acquired in a module specifically designed to provide these skills.
